Ramadan Rituals in the Old City

Monday 5 June @ 8.00 - 10.30 pm
Meeting Point: Centre for Jerusalem Studies - King Faisal St.., the Old City

To celebrate Ramadan, Jerusalem has cast away its wistful melancholy and has donned joyful, festive apparel. The local youth of the various neighborhoods vie with each other in decorating their living quarters. Ramadan lanterns (fawanis Ramadan) dangle decoratively from ornate strings of flickering yellow, green, and red strings of lights . Shops reopen after the breaking of the fast; vendors selling KatayefNammurah, and other pastries proliferate... A festive atmosphere welcomes the thousands of pious men and women who flock nightly to Al-Aqsa Mosque to pray, study the Koran, meditate and perform the special Taraweeh prayers.
