Socio-Spatial Exclusion of Roma in Eastern Europe

Roma are the most marginalised and excluded minority group in Europe. Numbering 12 million across Europe, Roma face prejudice, discrimination and social exclusion in their daily lives which impacts on their ability to get a job, to access healthcare and education. This presentation will focus on housing, particularly on socio-spatial segregation and what this means for territoriality, identity and belonging. It will draw upon theories of advanced marginalisation, human geography, and public policy. Then it will offer a comparative case study based on field research in two of the largest Roma settlements in the world, in Skopje, the capital of Macedonia and in Košice in eastern Slovakia.
