"Jerusalem:
Urban spatial changes during political uncertainty 1994-2016"


The talk will focus on what has changed on the ground in east Jerusalem and its hinterland since the Oslo agreement and will discuss the implications for a potential Palestinian-Israeli national political agreement. It will also examine Palestinian forms of resistance to Israeli hegemony and strategic options for Palestinian growth and development in the future.

Prof. Bollens studies urbanism and nationalism in politically contested cities. He has interviewed over 300 urban professionals and community advocates in Jerusalem, Beirut, Belfast, Johannesburg, Nicosia (Cyprus), Sarajevo and Mostar (Bosnia), and Barcelona and Basque cities (Spain) about the role of urban policy and city building amidst nationalistic ethnic conflict and political transitions. His most recent book is City and Soul in Divided Societies (2012, Routledge).
